Painting in sunny weather presents a considerable challenge for the artist. This is due to the enormous tonal range produced by sunlight.
Our world is three-dimensional, and light is distributed extremely unevenly across three-dimensional objects: one side may be dazzlingly flooded with sunlight, while the other is immersed in the deepest shadow.
The tonal difference between the brightest planes of objects facing the sun and the deepest shadows in sheltered areas can easily reach a ratio of 10,000:1 or more. This creates an enormous tonal range that our painting, being a flat, two-dimensional surface, simply cannot reproduce. Unlike a three-dimensional tree or bush, it cannot simultaneously have areas brightly illuminated by the sun and areas immersed in the deepest shadow.
However, by adjusting the tool toward the light source in a controlled way, the tonal range of the paints can be significantly expanded to correspond to that of the subject during comparison. Instead of a fixed adjustment, we are forced to use a
dynamic adjustment that changes as we work.
To do this, the illumination of the tool must be adjusted to the illumination of the specific area of the subject. The blade is turned until the paint sample on it comes close in tone to the area being compared.
To match the color of the
shadows, we reduce the illumination of the blade as much as possible. Under these conditions, the paint on the tool will appear significantly darker. This produces the effect we need: to match the shadows of the subject, the artist will automatically have to lighten the paint on the palette, which helps avoid creating dead, “black holes” in the shadows.
When comparing the
lightest areas of the subject, we turn the plane of the tool’s blade with the paint as far toward the light as possible.
We find the color and saturation of the
midtones between these extremes.
The lighter the object we are painting, the more light should fall on the blade. And vice versa.The practical sequence is as follows: the artist mixes an approximate tone and an approximate color for the selected area on the palette. The artist then brings the paint on the blade next to the subject and turns the plane to find the illumination at which the sample fits the required area tonally. At this point, the color and saturation can be compared and refined to the required values.
It is important to emphasize that when painting en plein air, the method of direct comparison remains a compromise. Dynamic adjustment makes it possible to compare
color and
saturation accurately, while the tonality of each area is established using the traditional method of relationships on the palette and then refined in the painting.
